Urban Boatbuilders sells apprentice-built boats and we help our project partners market and sell their boats. The proceeds help defray the costs of the program, making it possible for more youth to gain hands-on building experience. Why buy a wooden
boat? |

16-foot Skin-On-Frame Canoe,
designed by Robert Morris |
|
|
|
|
|
Traditionally,
seals
would have
had
to
die to
make this
kind of
craft.
Aleuts
and
other
nomadic
hunters used to
sew
seal skin
on lashed
framework made up of
driftwood
and animal sinew. It
made for a
lightweight,
material
efficient hull that
moved with
the waves.
Our
canoe is a
modern adaptation
of the old ways,
using
a few
new materials that
spare the lives
of
our
marine
friends.

construction, cherry,

17' MCA Guide canoe built in skin-on-frame Designed by Karl N. Ketter ![]() |
|
|
This is a
design
from the
Minnesota
Canoe
Association.
It has
a
traditional design
with
tumblehome sides,
and
moderately high
ends.
It
also
has slightly
re-curved
stems and a
graceful
sheer
line.
This canoe was
originally
designed for
cedar
strip
construction
and
we have
updated it
by
using
skin-on-frame boat
construction techniques
to
create
a
lighter weight and
more
unique canoe.
*Northern white pine construction, cherry, walnut, cedar, elm and ash
trim
Specifications: See a great slide show of the boat under construction! $1,000 Also under construction: A 17' version of the MCA Guide model in

1915 16' Old
Town
Canoe
--
a newly
restored
classic
|
|
|
|
Very rare 1915 Old Town
canoe (SN35494). This is
an HW model grade AA
(mahogany
trim).
This
canoe
was
restored in
our shop by
professional boat
building
instructors
and
apprentices.
It was
completely
stripped of the old
paint
and canvas.
Minor
structural damage was
repaired. It was
varnished, oiled and
canvassed
to look the
original.
Some cosmetic
flaws remain
which do
not
effect it structurally and
help retain it's
original
character.

| Mississippi Skiff -- 11 foot traditionally built rowboat ( plywood bottom) -- 2 in stock |
|
|
|
If you like
to row, fish,
or perhaps
even kiss on a
lake, this
skiff is a good
choice.
With
its traditional
wooden
construction, it
has an
old-world
appeal
that's hard
to
find nowadays. Its external
oak keel
and
hefty bottom
planking can
withstand some
abuse, so go
ahead, take out your
oars,
fishing rod, and lover for
some
irresponsible, old
fashioned fun.
*Northern white pine planks, white oak
structural
members Specifications: $900 7'5" Spoon-Bladed Oars
(pair)......$120 with
boat ($150
regularly) |
| 7'5" Spoon-Bladed Oars (pair) | |

*Hand Carved
*3 Coats Marine Varnish *Hardwood Tip $150**
comments: These really are some of the best-priced pieces of sculpture out there. Our apprentices spend hours carving these oars with drawknives, spokeshaves, and gouges. The resultant craftsmanship cannot be easily be found in this modern world of composites and automation. $150 buys you a wonderfully unique and functional set of oars, and subsidizes the inspiration of our youth. |

suit.
