What Boats?
|
|
|
| Our emphasis is on human-powered boats,
but any boats that are willing to keep pace with canoes, kayaks, and
rowing boats (3-4 MPH) are welcome to participate. Note: If
you have a high-powered planing boat, you might find this
frustrating. You can bring your own boat or, subject to
availability, use a boat provided by Urban Boatbuilders. One
of the most pleasurable aspects of the trip will be the opportunity
to trade off among boats -- going from paddling to rowing to taking
a rest break by just riding. |
The boats that will be provided by Urban Boatbuilders include two
21-foot yawl boats, each accommodating four oars-persons and a coxswain
(rudder-person). This type of boat was once used to transfer
passengers and supplies back and forth between ship moorings and land.
|
|
|
Urban Boatbuilders will also supply two small rowboats, two flat-bottom
kayaks (more stable, roomy, and comfortable than most kayaks), and
Arcebus, an enclosed 18-foot support boat with room for all camping
supplies and several passengers. |
|
|
Be sure to indicate on the sign-up form whether you plan to bring your
own boat or partner-up on one of ours. |
