Urban Boatbuilders will once again be at our booth outside the DNR building at the Minnesota State Fair. Apprentices will be building a boat on-site and staff will be there to answer specific questions about our programs. We need YOUR help to take this time to engage the thousands of people who visit the booth! You will receive training, an admission ticket and an Urban Boatbuilders t-shirt. Volunteers will teach fairgoers to tie a lash on a Wilderness Traveler frame and encourage them to:
-come to Untapped Potential beer-tasting fundraiser with silent auction
-sign up for a paddle class
-ask apprentices technical questions about boatbuilding or the tools they are using
– enter to win a free kayak
– learn more about volunteering
– help connect our program staff to educators
We will be there everyday of the fair, August 26-September 6. We have two shifts per day, each with two volunteers:
AM shift: 9AM-1:30PM
PM shift: 1:30PM-5:30PM
If you are interested in helping out at our State Fair booth, please email [email protected] for available shifts.
Before you sign up, please keep a few things in mind:
We will be holding two training sessions – Monday August 16 and Tuesday August 17th at 5:30 at the shop. If you’ve never worked the Fair with us before, you are required to attend one.
Volunteers will be expected to follow all COVID safety protocols required by the MN DNR ( we will cover this in training). At this time, there is no social distance requirement and masks are optional, if this changes in the next month we will adjust our outreach plan accordingly. Please do not sign up if you are not comfortable speaking with multiple people in a possibly crowded outdoor setting. It is highly recommended that volunteers are vaccinated, and by signing up, you will assume all risk for participating in this public event.
